SERVICES OFFERED BY THE GPDCRC

Community Access Program (CAP)

"Youth Internships (YI) at community access sites are coordinated by Industry Canada and are funded through the Canada's Youth Employment Strategy which is overseen by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada. The internships are intended to provide employment opportunities for young Canadians between the ages of 15 and 30, primarily students, recent graduates, the underemployed and the unemployed."

The CAP sites are computer desks set up in 3 places around Gilbert Plains: the GP Drop-In Center, Sunset Lodge, and Burrows Apartments. These sites are designed for the community to have free access to computers, the internet, e-readers, printing, and face-to-face technology help from the youth intern. Each site is equipped with a manual, a black and white printer, a desktop computer, webcam, speakers, and a sign-up sheet for troubleshooting sessions during CAP intern hours.

Cyber Camps and educational computer sessions are planned within the community. These include a hands-on learning environment where senior citizens or inclined community members can practise their computer skills and learn how to perform basic, but crucial, tasks.

If we can make technology less scary and more accessible to seniors, we can improve and enrich lives by using the computer. The internet is a gateway to so much knowledge and information that can be used change their lives for the better.

For example, in the video to the right, an elderly woman named Ida has a Skype session with her relatives. Through video chat she was able to communicate with people she has not seen in person for years, and brought her joy to speak to them, even through a screen.

Technology also helps to bridge the gap between the younger generation and the older. By utilizing youth to teach what they know of computers, we are making connections with seniors and kids that wouldn't have been made otherwise.
