SENIOR HOUSING

Senior Housing

There's no place like home!

There are three seniors housing units in Gilbert Plains: Sunset Lodge, Burrows Apartments and the new Gilbert Plains Place, a 55+ seniors housing complex with 10 life-lease units, heated car parkade, common room and care-taking included.

Burrows Apartments

To apply for a suite within the Burrows apartment Complex at 101 Burrows Ave East, a person needs to fill out an application; these can be picked up at any Manitoba Housing office. The application can be mailed out or printed out from our website below:

Once the application is handed in with all of the necessary documentation, it takes, on average, 4-6 weeks to process. Housing is based on need, NOT 1st come 1st served. If the application is approved, once a unit becomes available, that the applicant qualifies for (we follow National Occupancy Standards), a Property Manager would contact the person by phone or mail to offer a unit. The current acting property manager for the Burrows Apartments is Colleen Coombs(204-622-2008)Rent is based on Gross Income. In general, it would be around 27% of the persons Gross Income. In the case of Burrows Apts, if they needed a Studio apartment, the rent would calculate as 25%; a 1 bedroom -27% .There are 18 units in total within the Burrows Apartments. There are a total of 14 Studio apartments and 4 one bedroom units. We do have on site Laundry facilities, a common room including a small kitchen and sitting space outside the building. The unit is run by Manitoba Housing, a Crown Corporation overseen by our current Cabinet Minister Peter Bjornson. In the event of a repair or maintenance issue, we do have a 24-hour call centre. If a tenant has another issue not related to the building itself, they would contact their Property Manager.

Sunset Lodge

Plains Sunset Lodge, located at 18 Buller Ave East, built in 1971. It was built to provide and maintain affordable rental units for seniors and persons with disabilities. It is managed by a volunteer board of 13 members. Originally it was sponsored by the Kinsmen Club and funds were raised locally. Initial donations were made by private individuals and the Town and Rural Municipalities of Gilbert Plains and area. There are 8 suites in the Plains Sunset Lodge and are currently all occupied. There are 2 one bedroom, 2 bachelor suites and 4 double suites, all booked and waiting listed. The Plains Sunset Lodge is governed by Manitoba Housing and provides subsidized rent if need be for residents. The Sunset has a common room were the residents meet to socialize and enjoy family gatherings. The common room is also used for health and wellness, and informational presentations. There is a TV, DVD player, Wii, computer, printer, books, games, and puzzle table in the common room. There is also a kitchen, laundry, storage, and recycling facilities off the common room. There are 2 garden spots in the back and flower beds from one end of the building to other end in the front. On a beautiful summer evening, you can see the residents sitting out on the front deck, enjoying the evenings. The board, caretakers, and the residents are very proud of the Plains Sunset Lodge. We are constantly improving projects at the Plains Sunset Lodge. These projects are possible because our volunteers believe in the purpose of the upgrades and maintaining the Plains Sunset Lodge.
